Mechanism

Today, the K-pop entertainment business resembles a fine watch. Just as countless parts must mesh without error for a mechanical watch to keep time, an artist reaches the world only when the work of many specialists, from A&R and training to visuals and marketing, meshes together. Just as high-end watchmaking finishes by hand even the hidden parts inside the case, countless unseen hands touch every scene on stage. Just as traditional workshops have embraced new materials such as silicon and new methods, technology has entered K-pop planning and production, beginning with the way fans and artists meet. Work finished this way keeps its value long after the trend has passed.

The production mechanism of NEWKiT STUDIO also originates in this movement. Like tuning the signals of the world into resonance with refined skill, they come from the making of a watch. In that order come Signal, which recognizes a person’s potential, Calibre, which refines it, Movement, which gives it direction, and Atelier, which opens it up together with fans. At the end of that sequence, fans sometimes meet an artist first through a single video or a single stage rather than through the music. To us, every place where an artist meets the world is part of the same story as the music.

Signal · Casting

Signal

A watch begins long before its hands turn, with an eye that chooses material that has not yet taken any shape. Every star, too, begins unfinished. Our casting team, Signal, stands at that first stage. What this stage asks is not how brightly someone shines today, but what grain they carry within. A light that resembles someone else’s does not stay long, so we trust the human eye before the numbers and go beyond borders to find that grain.

Calibre · Training

Calibre

Perfection comes from precision. Even chosen material finds its own rhythm only after it has been cut and fitted countless times by a craftsman’s hands. Singing and dancing are not just making sounds and moving the body; they are a language chosen to express emotion. No two people feel alike, so the way we refine that language has to fit each person. For that precision, we look at technique and character, mental strength and physical condition, one by one, every week. Just as a watch was remade again and again so a tennis player could wear it during matches, until it weighed 11.5 grams without its strap, we use the newest technology for each small change in a single person.

Movement · Planning · A&R

Movement

Refined parts tell the time only once they begin to turn together. Yet the world’s time does not flow in one direction like the hands of a watch. A single Formula 1 car carries 300 sensors that send out more than 1.1 million data points every second. Just as a race team reads that flow to build its race strategy and choose the moment to change tyres, we read the flow of genres, fandoms and markets in data to decide what to release, when and how. At the center is A&R, choosing the songs and shaping the sound, and the work reaches as far as designing in which markets and how that music becomes a business.

Atelier · Interaction

Atelier

In the end, the meshing parts step back behind a single dial, and what the world faces is the watch’s face. Our interaction team, Atelier, is the final stage, where that face is made. Atelier is not just promotion; it is a path to making another form of art. This stage brings content, events, apps, distribution and marketing together.

From video, photography and social media to concerts, fan events and pop-up stores, fan apps and communities, commerce and merchandise, it covers every place where audiences meet the artist. When a single video, the lighting of a pop-up and one button in an app all ring in the same grain, the audience hears the story once more.

We brought these often separate kinds of work together because each is a way of resonance, a way to make the same story ring out to the audience. Because it reaches the audience directly, the first thing this stage holds to is originality and an aesthetic pursuit.

Just as a musician’s app, holding all ten songs of an album, entered the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2014, what is made beyond the music becomes a work in its own right. Fans no longer stop at listening; they also take part in an artist’s story. We aim to open that story to fans, from places in a fan app where they choose and take part to the content they create themselves.

NEWKiT STUDIO

When the four stages of choosing, cutting, meshing and giving it a face come together as one, a watch becomes time that lasts on a person’s wrist. From Signal to Atelier, our four teams shape an artist’s time together in the same way. In every place we create, we carry one artist’s story in the same grain from beginning to end.
